The Thoughtfulness Of My Brother

One day my brother, Kenny, walked into my wood shop carrying a wooden saddle rack, that he had bought somewhere. He ask if I could carve a name and maybe put something fancy on it. The rack was fairly simple, made from pine, just plain looking. He told me the story of seeing a saddle hanging in the barn of an old cowboy friend of his. He ask about the saddle and got a complete history of it. The old cowboy had owned that saddle most of his adult life I believe. He told him who made the saddle and … Continue reading The Thoughtfulness Of My Brother

Over The Hump

A story about Howdy Fowler (yes our own Angora Chronicles Friend – Howdy Fowler) and his adventure of a lifetime. “Howdy told me once that this adventure is the single greatest highlight of his life and to have it captured on the pages of Texas Monthly – Don’t get much better than that”. I asked Howdy about some pictures one time and he came thru with this one. This is a story that was written by Carol Chapman for the February 1995 issue of Texas Monthly. NOW THAT STORY: THE REAL REASON THAT camels are called ships of the desert … Continue reading Over The Hump

What did we talk about that afternoon?

This is an add-on to a story about an afternoon conversation I had with our then Governor Mark White. It was mostly centered around the over crowding problem in Texas Prisons. He knew I was in the construction business and was seeking my assistance in piloting a program to give early release to some worthy prisoners that just needed a break. He thought that if they could come out and show up to work (digging ditches, if you will) and not get back in trouble, they could find their way more easily back into society. We did some planning and … Continue reading What did we talk about that afternoon?

The Little Actress

Not long after we moved to Bertram, a new pastor was sent to the Methodist Church. He and his wife were very lovely people. They had arrived here after spending time in Goldthwaite, Texas. They had become acquainted with a young couple there that had a young daughter and twin sons that were toddlers. One time the little girl came to spend a few days with them. They brought her over to our place see the donkeys and the lambs. I was heading down to feed the catfish in our pond so she wanted to go too. I put her … Continue reading The Little Actress

Rubbing Shoulders With Eva Longoria

During a rant earlier on my Political Speak Group I related the following true story. I didn’t repost it in its entirety due to my desire to not politicize this group. But you can gather I have a very different view of life than she does. Now for the story: And to think – I once found myself rubbing shoulders with this bimbo. “Yes, the Ronbo here rubbed shoulders with Eva Longoria”. I was invited to sit on the floor at a SA Spurs game in the owners seats at courtside. Eva and Tony Parker were an item at the … Continue reading Rubbing Shoulders With Eva Longoria

It Was 45 Years Ago This Very Day

On this day in 1974 we welcomed our very first son into the world. We got up early that morning and drove to St. David’s Hospital, all just like clockwork. We were in no real hurry, but she knew for sure that was the day. Once she was checked in, I nervously sat around waiting for the big event, while she was calm and ready for what was to come. Then at 2:26 PM Matthew Wayne Lewis came into the world. It was truly the most fabulous birthday present I could ever receive. His birth set the tone for how … Continue reading It Was 45 Years Ago This Very Day

Just Thinking About Those Out Of The Way Places That We Used To Eat At

There is really no reason a person would ever pass through Brundage Texas. It’s not on your way to anyplace. It’s stuck out between Carrizo Springs and Dilley. Well I guess if you were an oilfield worker or worked on a South Texas Ranch you may have gone to Brundage. When I was working in South Texas in the 70’s and 80’s different ones would tell me about this steakhouse at Brundage. So I started going there to eat if I was anywhere down in that country. I’d always get there after dark so I couldn’t tell you exactly what … Continue reading Just Thinking About Those Out Of The Way Places That We Used To Eat At

A Singer, I’m Not

I have never been a strong singer would be putting it mildly, but if there were plenty of other people singing at church I have belted out a fairly loud noise before. I love the old hymns very much. It doesn’t seem like we sing nearly enough of them anymore. Back at that time on fifth Sunday’s we would use the Cokesbury Hymnal (it’s a Methodist thing) and take turns calling out for requests. Everyone knew every song so it was always a joyous time. Madeline was not there this one particular Sunday and no one was sitting very close … Continue reading A Singer, I’m Not

Our Personal Experience With Legadema

In April 2004 we traveled to South Africa on a spiritual pilgrimage. The trip was full of adventure, with us seeing and having a lot of once in a lifetime experiences. There were a dozen or so other people from around the world with us. After a couple of weeks of that trip, our dear friend Mary Ann Gurno, Madeline and I broke away and extended our trip traveling to Victoria Falls and then on to Mombo Camp in the Okavango Delta of Botswana. It was the most fantastic thing I’ve ever done in my life. We lived among every … Continue reading Our Personal Experience With Legadema

How Great Is The Internet !

While looking through a box of old papers and memorabilia, my brother sent me a photo of a card and it’s envelope that was addressed to our grandfather in 1938 at an Austin address. We knew he spent a long duration in the hospital back then due to a ruptured appendix. We surmised that perhaps St. David’s Hospital was at 205 Caney St. in its early years. I knew we had a conversation on another FB group a while back about the old St. David’s, complete with photos. So that pretty well eliminated it being on Caney St. in 1938. … Continue reading How Great Is The Internet !
