MQ and the Hog Buyer

This story was told to me by Winfield about his dad, MQ. I’m pretty sure that MQ was as crazy as his son, Winfield. There are many stories about him but none that top the following. I had only limited contact with him when I was a kid. The first time I remember seeing MQ was during a hog buying episode when he bought a pen full of hogs from Brown Parker. Trying to load the hogs, something happened causing him to slip down in the loading chute with a big sow on top of him. He literally bit her … Continue reading MQ and the Hog Buyer

Winfield’s Funeral (also Jazzy’s Funeral)

I should let this story be the final one for Winfield, but I will go ahead and tell it now, because there are many other chapters between the one I wrote earlier about him and the end. I’m sure a lot of people wondered what ever happened to him. His family was pretty well off in terms of most of us. His dad had a good job at one of the dams in the area and also had a large hog farm. Winfield left Marble Falls in a Porsche headed to LSU in the fall of 1969. He became a … Continue reading Winfield’s Funeral (also Jazzy’s Funeral)

Winfield and the Farming Enterprise

When Winfield left Austin on shaky ground with me, and many others may I add, he ended up in Oklahoma for a short time. Doing what? Trying to go into the Utilities Construction Business. That venture didn’t make it far, but I wasn’t surprised. One day when he was coming through Austin from Oklahoma he called and wanted to stop for a visit. We agreed to meet at one of my jobsites. I had just purchased a micro-cassette recorder and was playing with it when Winfield drove up. Knowing that I was going to hear some wild stories that I … Continue reading Winfield and the Farming Enterprise

Winfield’s Trip To Jail

Winfield was a guy a grade ahead of me at Marble Falls High School. He had the reputation of doing wild and crazy things. We ran around together some, but weren’t constant companions in our school days. He was extremely intelligent, but lacking in the common sense department. After high school, he went off to college and became a C.P.A. I saw very little of Winfield throughout the 70s, as he was in Houston, carving out his niche in the accounting world. Sometime in the early 80s, I found out that Winfield was in Austin working for a small local … Continue reading Winfield’s Trip To Jail

Winfield’s Expert Witness

After all of our wild rides through life with Winfield as our CPA, he called on Kenny to testify as an expert witness in a case in Travis County after he switched to being a lawyer. This was in the late 1980’s. There was a personal injury case involving someone hurt in a mishap with an animal. Not sure if it was a horse or a cow. But something Kenny knew something about. To prepare for the trial, Winfield came in from Houston. They decided to meet at The New West Nightclub in North Austin. After several hours of preparation, … Continue reading Winfield’s Expert Witness

Back When I Went Middle Aged Crazy And Bought A Corvette

All my life I wanted a Corvette almost more than anything in the world. I didn’t get one until about 1985. I drove up to a used truck dealership in Buda, Texas that I’d been doing business with. There set a very nice 1981 Corvette, with a for sale sign on it. It belonged to the daughter of the owner. It really looked classy. I had to have it. I had just sold a prime piece of property and felt rich. Nothing was going to stop me from owning it. Especially if I closed the deal before Madeline found out. … Continue reading Back When I Went Middle Aged Crazy And Bought A Corvette

Cec and the Hellion

For some odd reason our Dad liked almost anything miniature. The smaller the tractor the better. He even liked small cars and pickups. He had a little miniature horse he kept around for a long time. Of course he had a little yelping dog he carried around everywhere. But when I think about it, Bonnie Gay wasn’t very big either and he kept her around for a long time. One day he called Kenny and me to make sure we were coming up for the weekend. He had something he wanted us to see and try out. When we got … Continue reading Cec and the Hellion

Sometimes you just have to adjust to the situation.

We drink coffee in the morning, pretty well every morning. Even though there are cheaper ways to drink coffee, we buy the K Cups and use a Keurig because we seldom drink more than a cup (although they are big cups). So making a pot of coffee seems like over kill. I drink my coffee out of a disposable Dixie Cup of the 16 ounce variety, with a lid. A while back my little granddaughter, Fia, (Sofia) started bringing me cups of coffee all during the day and night. With a face like this I couldn’t tell her that I … Continue reading Sometimes you just have to adjust to the situation.

A Moment Of Panic (from a few years ago)

I was on the road out of Corpus this morning. I got a call from the police department. Did we own a Cadillac STX, gray in color? I said we did. The dispatcher said they had gotten a call from ONSTAR about that car, which is Madeline’s. It could have been stolen, hijacked or involved in an accident. I asked her to let me go so it could call my wife. She said okay and she would call be back in 5 minutes. I started calling Madeline. No answer. Finally on the third try she answered. She was laughing. She … Continue reading A Moment Of Panic (from a few years ago)

Don’t Just Follow The Crowd

Back in the high flying times of the 1980s, there were several of my contractor friends that enjoyed going to Las Vegas, as did I. There were about 10 or 12 couples this one particular weekend that all left Austin on Southwest Airlines together bound for a great fun filled weekend in Vegas. It was a flight that took us through Tucson, Az but we weren’t suppose to de-plane, just a short stop-over. It was a fun flight with a festive atmosphere. I never heard anything said that I thought was out of line. Just a lot of fun and … Continue reading Don’t Just Follow The Crowd
