Winfield’s Funeral (also Jazzy’s Funeral)

I should let this story be the final one for Winfield, but I will go ahead and tell it now, because there are many other chapters between the one I wrote earlier about him and the end. I’m sure a lot of people wondered what ever happened to him. His family was pretty well off in terms of most of us. When Winfield left Austin on shaky ground with me, and many others may I add, he ended up in Oklahoma for a short time. Doing what? Trying to go into the Utilities Construction Business. Winfield’s Trip To Jail

Winfield was a guy a grade ahead of me at Marble Falls High School. He had the reputation of doing wild and crazy things. We ran around together some, but weren’t constant companions in our school days. He was extremely intelligent, but lacking in the common sense department. Winfield’s Expert Witness

After all of our wild rides through life with Winfield as our CPA, he called on Kenny to testify as an expert witness in a case in Travis County after he switched to being a lawyer. This was in the late 1980’s. There was a personal injury case involving someone hurt in a mishap with an animal. Not sure if it was a horse or a cow. But something Kenny knew something about. All my life I wanted a Corvette almost more than anything in the world. I didn’t get one until about 1985. I drove up to a used truck dealership in Buda, Texas that I’d been doing business with. Sometimes you just have to adjust to the situation.

We drink coffee in the morning, pretty well every morning. Even though there are cheaper ways to drink coffee, we buy the K Cups and use a Keurig because we seldom drink more than a cup (although they are big cups). So making a pot of coffee seems like over kill. I drink my coffee out of a disposable Dixie Cup of the 16 ounce variety, with a lid. A while back my little granddaughter, Fia, (Sofia) started bringing me cups of coffee all during the day and night. I was on the road out of Corpus this morning. I got a call from the police department. Did we own a Cadillac STX, gray in color? I said we did. The dispatcher said they had gotten a call from ONSTAR about that car, which is Madeline’s. It could have been stolen, hijacked or involved in an accident. I asked her to let me go so it could call my wife. She said okay and she would call be back in 5 minutes. I started calling Madeline. No answer. Finally on the third try she answered. Back in the high flying times of the 1980s, there were several of my contractor friends that enjoyed going to Las Vegas, as did I. There were about 10 or 12 couples this one particular weekend that all left Austin on Southwest Airlines together bound for a great fun filled weekend in Vegas. The Two Minute Talk That Has Lasted Me A Lifetime

Udo was of German descent. He had a coarseness about him, but an incredible refinement as well. He adapted to the situation he was in at the moment. When he retired after a long career in the excavation business, he sold me his office and yard, along with some heavy equipment and trucks. We lived across the street from he and his wife, so our visits were frequent. In retirement he moved from his lifetime hobby of flying planes, to flying helicopters.
