The Auto Theft From Giesecke’s Supermarket (or was it HEB by that time)

I worked at the Luther – McDuff Chevrolet Dealership my senior year of high school. Others that worked there were: Cecil Rhoades – Manager and car salesman extraordinaire. JC Copeland – A very nice, rotund old fellow – a lifelong car salesman type. John Miller – The most genteel person I’d ever met, and a life long MF resident. Everyone trusted John. Karen Schaefer – a pretty young red head that my brother had dated in high school and had married not long before this incident. We were all sitting in the office one day when several police cars arrived. … Continue reading The Auto Theft From Giesecke’s Supermarket (or was it HEB by that time)

The Evolution of Supermarkets in Marble Falls

I was asked recently when HEB first appeared in Marble Falls. That got me to thinking about the series of events that got us to where we are today with Marble Falls Supermarkets. I am going to tell you my best recollection of when I remember the various events happening in the way people were shopping for food at least during my lifetime. As you read this, please feel free to correct me or firm up dates and ownerships. Giesecke’s Bros. Market was what I consider the first supermarket. Prior to that time there were several mercantile’s and small grocery … Continue reading The Evolution of Supermarkets in Marble Falls

Anyone Feeling Like Stepping Out Of Your Comfort Zone Tonight?

I would love to hear who all knows about the old farmhouse on US 281 just south of Hof Brau, (most likely it was the Mustang Tavern at the this time) that was a “House of Ill Repute”. I think the time frame was in the early 1960’s. The house still stands today. It is the next property south of the old Hof Brau, on the same side of the highway. A new meeting place for many of us. Home State Bank found a new home. The Old Factory Building came down. Some History Of Feed Stores In Marble Falls – The Early Days

We ran across a receipt in an old wallet than belonged to my Grandfather, Theron Lewis. He passed away in 1958. The receipt was for a ton of cattle cubes from Winters Supply Company in Marble Falls. It was dated 8-12-1953. I was not familiar with the business so I called Sam Burnam to see if that was the same business owned by his family, maybe at an earlier time. According to Sam, it was a different business and location. Winters Supply was located at the back of Bill Smiths Mobil Station that was at Highway 281 and 4th Street, … Continue reading Some History Of Feed Stores In Marble Falls – The Early Days

A Story About My Great Great Grandparents, Hugh and Mary Ann Bible Clark

This was taken from the very fine book “The Bible Family” by Naomi Chadwick. This account of an afternoon in the life of Hugh & Mary Ann Bible Clark. It was pretty much a fact of life in that time period. This story connects to many of us on this group. Often when I read this I think about how much the course of many of our live’s depended on that decision made on this mans way to the lot that day. Below was contributed by Grant Ray Thompson Hugh Clark I ran across this remarkable 1 inch square picture … Continue reading A Story About My Great Great Grandparents, Hugh and Mary Ann Bible Clark

Discovering What Can’t Be Seen

The Big Open Space At The Marble Falls City Cemetery I arrived at the cemetery early, not long after sun up. I wanted to get a jump on the heat, if I was going to find where the Sparks family was buried. Not spending much time at that place, at least in many years, it didn’t take me long to figure out that finding a single set of graves was like the needle in a haystack. I walked awhile and my friend Tommy showed up. I had called him a little earlier to see if he’d stop by. We continued … Continue reading Discovering What Can’t Be Seen

The Mystery Of The Marble Falls Granite Marker

I recently came across this newspaper clipping. I haven’t been able to date it yet. Mrs. W.W. “Iva” Fuller was a tenacious woman and this article demonstrates that. I talked to her daughter, Mary Alice, but she doesn’t remember the actual date of the article. But it calls into question several things for me. We had this Marble Falls Monument as a previous topic some time back. It appears the monument was originally placed many years ago when Gen. Adam R. “Stovepipe” Johnson was still alive. The monument was moved or rededicated in a 1962 ceremony that LBJ attended. The … Continue reading The Mystery Of The Marble Falls Granite Marker

Thomas Ferguson

As I browsed the 100 Pages of Marble Falls History 1887-1987 published by the Highlander back in 1987 to commemorate the Centennial of the Town, I ran across this paragraph from 1922. (Thomas E. is actually Thomas C.) Being curious about what all young Thomas accomplished during his lifetime, I did some digging. I was to find out that he is buried at Cook-Walden Memorial Gardens in Austin. Following is a pretty good summary of his lifelong accomplishments. So in summary I guess you can say the boy that graduated Burnet High School at 14 did go on to accomplish … Continue reading Thomas Ferguson
