Is There Really Anything To A Dream?

I originally wrote this story back in October, 2015. Yesterday there was the post about not telling about a bad dream until after breakfast. Not knowing whether that applies to all dreams, I got up and had a bowl of Raisin Bran, just to keep it on the safe side. When I we lived in Dripping Springs in the 1985-1991 timeframe I, along with my sons were all baptized one Sunday morning by Rev. Grady Roe. It was about this time of year in 1985. I had only given myself over to going to church real sparingly up to that … Continue reading Is There Really Anything To A Dream?

A Little Nose Problem

Jose Tobias had just arrived in this country from a far away land south of the border. We hired him to work on a crew. He was a little slow and I’m not taking about how he walked. Back in those days, a lot of us used Vicks Inhalers. A lot allergies and sinus problems and we tried everything for a little relief at certain times of the year. Jose had a stopped-up nose so when they went to the 7/11 one day he purchased his first Vicks Inhaler. He had seen me do it I guess he figured it … Continue reading A Little Nose Problem

A Typical, Yet Untypical Vacation

One of our family vacations that we were able to plan ahead and actually take was to California. I say that, because many times we planned vacations and because of being self employed the business would get shoved in front of family. For that I’m regretful but being in business afforded us opportunities that perhaps we wouldn’t have had otherwise. This year, 1986 I think, took us to Los Angeles to do some of the same stuff most people do when there. Universal Studios and other Hollywood stuff, went to see the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach as well … Continue reading A Typical, Yet Untypical Vacation

Winfield, Me and the Capitol National Bank

Back when my friend Winfield, the CPA, worked for me we were being courted by one of the big downtown Austin banks. Emory Thompson was the pitch man for The Capitol National Bank that would come by and try to get us bring our business to them. I knew him, his family had owned a big tire business that had sold and he went from being a tire salesman to being a money salesman. We had been doing business with a small local bank in north Austin, aptly named North Austin State Bank. They had done everything I’d ever wanted … Continue reading Winfield, Me and the Capitol National Bank

MQ and the Hog Buyer

This story was told to me by Winfield about his dad, MQ. I’m pretty sure that MQ was as crazy as his son, Winfield. There are many stories about him but none that top the following. I had only limited contact with him when I was a kid. The first time I remember seeing MQ was during a hog buying episode when he bought a pen full of hogs from Brown Parker. Trying to load the hogs, something happened causing him to slip down in the loading chute with a big sow on top of him. He literally bit her … Continue reading MQ and the Hog Buyer

Winfield’s Funeral (also Jazzy’s Funeral)

I should let this story be the final one for Winfield, but I will go ahead and tell it now, because there are many other chapters between the one I wrote earlier about him and the end. I’m sure a lot of people wondered what ever happened to him. His family was pretty well off in terms of most of us. His dad had a good job at one of the dams in the area and also had a large hog farm. Winfield left Marble Falls in a Porsche headed to LSU in the fall of 1969. He became a … Continue reading Winfield’s Funeral (also Jazzy’s Funeral)

Winfield’s Trip To Jail

Winfield was a guy a grade ahead of me at Marble Falls High School. He had the reputation of doing wild and crazy things. We ran around together some, but weren’t constant companions in our school days. He was extremely intelligent, but lacking in the common sense department. After high school, he went off to college and became a C.P.A. I saw very little of Winfield throughout the 70s, as he was in Houston, carving out his niche in the accounting world. Sometime in the early 80s, I found out that Winfield was in Austin working for a small local … Continue reading Winfield’s Trip To Jail

Winfield’s Expert Witness

After all of our wild rides through life with Winfield as our CPA, he called on Kenny to testify as an expert witness in a case in Travis County after he switched to being a lawyer. This was in the late 1980’s. There was a personal injury case involving someone hurt in a mishap with an animal. Not sure if it was a horse or a cow. But something Kenny knew something about. To prepare for the trial, Winfield came in from Houston. They decided to meet at The New West Nightclub in North Austin. After several hours of preparation, … Continue reading Winfield’s Expert Witness

Back When I Went Middle Aged Crazy And Bought A Corvette

All my life I wanted a Corvette almost more than anything in the world. I didn’t get one until about 1985. I drove up to a used truck dealership in Buda, Texas that I’d been doing business with. There set a very nice 1981 Corvette, with a for sale sign on it. It belonged to the daughter of the owner. It really looked classy. I had to have it. I had just sold a prime piece of property and felt rich. Nothing was going to stop me from owning it. Especially if I closed the deal before Madeline found out. … Continue reading Back When I Went Middle Aged Crazy And Bought A Corvette

Cec and the Hellion

For some odd reason our Dad liked almost anything miniature. The smaller the tractor the better. He even liked small cars and pickups. He had a little miniature horse he kept around for a long time. Of course he had a little yelping dog he carried around everywhere. But when I think about it, Bonnie Gay wasn’t very big either and he kept her around for a long time. One day he called Kenny and me to make sure we were coming up for the weekend. He had something he wanted us to see and try out. When we got … Continue reading Cec and the Hellion
