Austin Public Pools

Fifty to Sixty years ago we went to Shipe Pool mostly, because my grandmother lived about a dozen blocks from there. We went to Northwest Park Pool a fair amount of time. But we also headed down to Barton Springs pretty often and even to Deep Eddy occasionally. Now that I think about it, we spent a lot of time in the public swimming pools, but of course Bull Creek was where we spent most of the hot summer days. Our kids, growing up in far South Austin knew Garrison Pool best of all. They were all great places to … Continue reading Austin Public Pools

I Don’t Even Know Where To Start With This

From my previous writings, I’m sure most of you have figured out that I go off half cocked at times and do things that create my own problems. But I’m as innocent as a newborn bunny rabbit in this deal. As many of you know, my wife’s mother, who turned 92 a month ago lives with us, as she has alzheimer’s. She is still very mobile, as any 92 year old can be. She is healthy, always has a great appetite and is generally very happy. Her daughter, who is “Her Friend” is extremely attentive to her and is so … Continue reading I Don’t Even Know Where To Start With This

This Is Called “Living In The Past”

A few years ago, when it was time to grab one of the big machines and take off across Texas, Charlie “Speedy” Leseman would get this rig all shined up and head out to wherever it was he needed to go. I don’t care what anyone says, that was a heavy haul rig. I was always proud to see those black trucks (there were others too) pulling out of a job loaded down and going to the next one. There’s a time and a place for everything. So now those are just fond memories. Continue reading This Is Called “Living In The Past”

The Making Of A Short Documentary

This is a Post that I made on this date February 7, 2018. We are six years and a million miles from here now. Several years ago my grandson Nathan came to me and ask for help with a school project. Nathan graduated last year and this happened when he was about 9 or 10 so yes, it’s been awhile. He needed to do a report about something historic. Since we owned the old Bertram Drug Store at that time and I’d researched the history of that building, I suggested that be the topic. A short time before that I … Continue reading The Making Of A Short Documentary

About As Close As Kenny Ever Got To Getting On Facebook

Not long after The Angora Chronicles got started, the following is a post that Kody made on behalf of his daddy. Actually Kenny did warn up to it all enough that he would occasionally send me a story to post. To tell you the truth, I’m pretty sure he wanted to get on FB, but was just that hard headed that he didn’t, after talking all the smack he did. I decided later on that it was much better that he stayed away from it all. When FB and company decided to start monitoring us all and taking down stuff … Continue reading About As Close As Kenny Ever Got To Getting On Facebook

The Flying Stick

It was my 16th year of life. My brother Kenny was in college up at Tarleton, his second semester and had moved into an apartment, that had formerly been occupied by a cop he was told. The cop had left a night stick behind. Kenny was sure that I would need that club one day, so he brought it home to me. He always looked out for me like that. The wooden stick had been drilled through the core had a steel rod inserted. I kept it stuck between the seat and the console. My means of transportation was a … Continue reading The Flying Stick

The Story Of The Bonnie & Clyde Movie (as told by Dink McDuff)

Paul Pruitt was a cattle buyer and had a feedlot down along the border. Dink had met him, I suppose, hanging out in one coffee shop or the other when he was there working on the water and sewer system in Eagle Pass back in the 60s. One day Paul invited Dink to fly with him to look at some cattle down at Laredo. Paul flew his own plane. They made it there and took care of the business they needed to and got ready to leave to fly back to Eagle Pass. A rain system was moving in so … Continue reading The Story Of The Bonnie & Clyde Movie (as told by Dink McDuff)

Falstaff Beer and My Uncle Oscar (Ott)

This first photo makes me think about my mother’s oldest brother, Oscar Leland Boultinghouse. He was a fiddle player, that played around the Central Texas Area in many of the dance halls and was known as Oscar “Falstaff” Boultinghouse. I always supposed it was due to a beer company sponsorship, which was a popular thing back in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.For many years, perhaps to the end, he had a special affinity to Falstaff Beer, his brand of choice. The Colorful Characters Of My Youth

This Doesn’t Need To Be A Competition between the towns, you know. Even though most everything escalated into a rivalry of some degree back in my growing up years when it came to Burnet and Marble Falls. I was sitting around thinking about some of the real characters that were in Marble Falls when I was growing up. I just don’t think they make characters nowadays, like they used to. Did Burnet have any of these people that left a mark on the town like Marble Falls did? Or did they all end up in the south part of the … Continue reading The Colorful Characters Of My Youth

The Mystery Caller

Woody was getting hard of hearing and even a little cranky when it came to answering and talking on the phone. The Woody I’m referring to was our office manager back in our early days in the construction business. In fact he was our head accountant also. Okay, Woody was the only person we had in the office and the only one we needed. He did it all, when it came to answering the phone, payroll, our payables and receivables and keeping the tax man happy and insurance all straight. He did then what now takes a whole office full … Continue reading The Mystery Caller
