A “Trip” to Mackinac Island Michigan …..back when I was young enough to actually run a foot race

Several Utility Contractors formed the Texas Utility Contractors Association back in the mid 1980’s. We were a branch of The National Utility Contractors Association. We traveled to far away places to have our board meetings so we could mix pleasure with business and visit nice places around the country. We would make at least one trip to Washington DC each year also to make our desires be known to the elected officials there. One of those meeting was in Mackinac Island, Michigan one summer, probably about 1987. If you never been there, it’s a really beautiful place. Except this time … Continue reading A “Trip” to Mackinac Island Michigan …..back when I was young enough to actually run a foot race

Back When I Aspired To Driving A Cattle Truck For A Living

I had graduated from high school earlier that year and trying to “find myself” is the best way to describe where I was in life. It was already the time of year when the weather was starting to get cooler, so most likely it was November. Butch Sayers got me to go with him to Marysville, California to deliver a truck load of Corriente Steers (Mexican Roping Steers). We left Marble Falls in the middle of the afternoon and arrived in Del Rio at the stockyards after dark. The trip had been sprung on me suddenly and I didn’t have … Continue reading Back When I Aspired To Driving A Cattle Truck For A Living

Hauling Guns Into Mexico

In the fall of 1984 I had a very big real estate deal happen that made me think we’d never see another poor day. So what did I do? I went and bought a new Lincoln Sedan. It was the Cartier addition. A very slick ride. It wasn’t for Madeline. There was no way she could get all the boys and their friends in it. She drove a suburban. I had a pickup or a suburban or both. I’m absolutely positive there was a reason I bought the Lincoln. I just can’t think what that reason might have been. I … Continue reading Hauling Guns Into Mexico

Oliver The Finicky Cat

This cat wandered up to our place a couple years ago. I’m not sure he likes being an outside cat, but I’m not willing to take our relationship far enough to let him indoors. But he does have his “Throne” in the garage. He started using the backseat of my Gold Wing Motorcycle for his domicile. I now have him a bed that has been installed in place of just an old naugahyde seat. I’m not sure what is going to happen if I ever decide to use that motorcycle for it’s intended purpose again, like riding around the Hill … Continue reading Oliver The Finicky Cat

The Angora Book Lady (from January 2015)

The other day I was in the Blue Bonnet Cafe having breakfast and visiting with John Kemper when Mrs. Jean Ebeling came to the front to pay her bill. The Mrs. Ebeling that is the mother of Dr. Robert “Bobby” Ebeling II that we, of the “70” graduating class, went to school with. John told me that Mr. Robert Ebeling I, passed away a few months ago. We were discussing the Ebeling family, and how Mrs. Ebeling is a ranching lady that truly is a breed cut from a cloth that we won’t see again. About that time she spied … Continue reading The Angora Book Lady (from January 2015)

Going To The Blue Bonnet For Breakfast

I used to hitch a ride to town with my dad when I was going to school. There were several reasons I’d do that. First off there was a time before I had a drivers license that I had no choice, except riding the bus. There were 2 reasons I didn’t or couldn’t ride on the bus. Mostly I just didn’t want to, because I’d be picked on. But sometimes I’d be picking on people and get my bus riding privileges taken away. A lot of the time it was when I had a car, but I’d tear it up … Continue reading Going To The Blue Bonnet For Breakfast

Then and Now

I graduated from high school in May 1970. By the fall of 70 I went to work in the underground utility industry. I believe I was earning around $3.00 per hour. Considering the minimum wage back then was $1.60, I was doing pretty well. A top operator was paid $3.75 per hour. By late spring of 1972, I had learned enough about the business, plus what I had picked up being around trucks and machinery my whole life, I subcontracted my first water line installation project in Burnet, Texas. I had a crew of 4 or 5 people including myself. … Continue reading Then and Now

What A Novel Idea !!!!

We have all grown used to calling up customer service and talking to someone that you can’t understand. That’s because that person is actually sitting in a call center in India, The Philippines or Bangladesh. I was having a conversation with a lady that works in a call center located right here in our fair little town of Bertram. You say you didn’t know there was a call center located here. It’s right in her home. Yes, she and her husband can remotely log in when they have time, day or night and take calls from people all over the … Continue reading What A Novel Idea !!!!

A Strange Thing Happened Early This Morning

I woke up and decided finish watching America’s Got Talent that I had drifted off in middle of last night. What would I do without a DVR? As I watched I bumped the remote control, causing it to change channels. It went to live TV. The following commercial was on. I picked up on it the second it started. I let it play out, then backed it up and recorded it. The reason I went to all that trouble you see, I saw my life playing out. Yes, 47 1/2 years ago my girl friend and I walked in the … Continue reading A Strange Thing Happened Early This Morning
