Fasten Your Seatbelt

I once was passing my neighbors weekend place out of Dripping Springs and saw he was there. It was a weekday and I realized he being a state employee, probably had the day off. It was Texas Independence Day. When I pulled up he came outside and we visited a few minutes, then he said, “why don’t we drive into town a buy a 6 pack of Lone Star Beer and drive over to the lookout and sit a spell and enjoy the afternoon”. I had nothing going on so that’s what we did. Amazing conversation, I’ll get into another … Continue reading Fasten Your Seatbelt

The Little Actress

Not long after we moved to Bertram, a new pastor was sent to the Methodist Church. He and his wife were very lovely people. They had arrived here after spending time in Goldthwaite, Texas. They had become acquainted with a young couple there that had a young daughter and twin sons that were toddlers. One time the little girl came to spend a few days with them. They brought her over to our place see the donkeys and the lambs. I was heading down to feed the catfish in our pond so she wanted to go too. I put her … Continue reading The Little Actress

Rubbing Shoulders With Eva Longoria

During a rant earlier on my Political Speak Group I related the following true story. I didn’t repost it in its entirety due to my desire to not politicize this group. But you can gather I have a very different view of life than she does. Now for the story: And to think – I once found myself rubbing shoulders with this bimbo. “Yes, the Ronbo here rubbed shoulders with Eva Longoria”. I was invited to sit on the floor at a SA Spurs game in the owners seats at courtside. Eva and Tony Parker were an item at the … Continue reading Rubbing Shoulders With Eva Longoria

Because It Felt Right

Back in the 1980s, probably 1987 or 88 , I was an adult sponsor on a high school church mission trip to Appalachia to a little coal mining town in West Virginia. A chance encounter happened one evening. After a hard days work, after dinner we would walk to a convenience store a couple of blocks from the community center where we were staying. We would go there and get ice cream, but mostly we went there to use a pay phone to call home. I had a cell phone but it was difficult back then to get service many … Continue reading Because It Felt Right

Is There Really Anything To A Dream?

A while back there was the post on here about not telling about a bad dream until after breakfast. Not knowing whether that applies to all dreams, I got up and had a bowl of Raisin Bran, just to keep it on the safe side. When we lived in Dripping Springs in the 1985-1991 timeframe, I along with my five sons were all baptized one Sunday morning by Rev. Grady Roe. It was in the fall of 1985. I had only given myself over to going to church real sparingly up to that point. I wasn’t sure I had the … Continue reading Is There Really Anything To A Dream?

Our Personal Experience With Legadema

In April 2004 we traveled to South Africa on a spiritual pilgrimage. The trip was full of adventure, with us seeing and having a lot of once in a lifetime experiences. There were a dozen or so other people from around the world with us. After a couple of weeks of that trip, our dear friend Mary Ann Gurno, Madeline and I broke away and extended our trip traveling to Victoria Falls and then on to Mombo Camp in the Okavango Delta of Botswana. It was the most fantastic thing I’ve ever done in my life. We lived among every … Continue reading Our Personal Experience With Legadema

The Two Drifters

Back in the days when we were doing the Guadalupe River State Park in 1981-1982 we had a lot of characters that worked on that project. One day a couple of guys walked up with backpacks on and ask for a job. They were probably about 20 years old. We had a bunk trailer onsite that had about 8 or 10 bunks in it. We let them move in. Summer and winter the guys mostly cooked out on a campfire or on a BBQ pit. They all would sit around the fire and tell stories and drink beer until all … Continue reading The Two Drifters

Just A Little Misunderstanding

Oftentimes things aren’t what they appear to be. My case in point was when a West Coast (previously East Coast) fellow signed up on this group a few days ago and submitted a story, I mostly dismissed it as someone trying to garner attention with a bunch of babbling. That was brought on by the fact this person was a complete unknown to us and one misspelled word. When he used “fueling” instead of “dueling” it made me and perhaps others think we were being fueled in one way or the other. Other exchanges seemed only to fuel that notion, … Continue reading Just A Little Misunderstanding

“Hey Bossman”

As hard as it is growing up in this world for teens now, it has to be so much harder for the black youth, especially in any of the large urban areas. I often think back to a half dozen black kids I befriended in the Oak Cliff in the early 90’s while doing a job there. I’ve written before about them, Freddy, Herman, Terry and the others names escape me just now. I would load them up in my suburban, after checking with their mother, grandmother or other guardian, (always a female – never remember even one of them … Continue reading “Hey Bossman”

The Angora Book Lady (from January 2015)

The other day I was in the Blue Bonnet Cafe having breakfast and visiting with John Kemper when Mrs. Jean Ebeling came to the front to pay her bill. The Mrs. Ebeling that is the mother of Dr. Robert “Bobby” Ebeling II that we, of the “70” graduating class, went to school with. John told me that Mr. Robert Ebeling I, passed away a few months ago. We were discussing the Ebeling family, and how Mrs. Ebeling is a ranching lady that truly is a breed cut from a cloth that we won’t see again. About that time she spied … Continue reading The Angora Book Lady (from January 2015)
