Eating In Del Rio I was a 17 year old kid just shortly before I turned 18. I had graduated from high school in May of 1970. This incident happened that summer. Butch Sayers got me to go with him to Marysville, California to deliver a truck load of Corriente Steers (Mexican Roping Steers). I wasn’t the most well behaved student in Mrs. Corkers 8th grade class. That year was the first and only time I ever had to change schools. I must have tried hard to fit in. I certainly got my share of attention, for a new kid. She was considered a good teacher, but was very stern. English was my most difficult subject. I didn’t like it, I didn’t understand it. Trying To Figure Out The History Of US 281 Running Through Burnet County

I referenced several sources including newspapers, other written sources and maps to ascertain the history of the main highway that now takes us from Wichita Falls to Brownsville. I am only speaking to the stretch as it extends through Burnet County, as it gets much more complicated trying to talk about the entire stretch as it goes from Canada to Mexico. Was There Any Way We Would Have Believed Our Little Ol Marble Falls Would Be What It is Now? The Chamber of Commerce slogan was MARBLE FALLS the little city – with the BIG FUTURE. The little flagstone building was the Chamber of Commerce, Welcome Center. Junior Bowles Gulf Station was where the rancher types congregated in the 60s & 70s. Rice Culture in Colorado County

Marker erected: Intersection of Main & Commerce Streets, Eagle Lake Marker Text:The rice industry did not spread into the coastal plains region west of Houston until the very end of the 19th century. In 1898, Captain William Dunovant (1845-1902), a local plantation owner and entrepreneur, planted 40 acres of rice at the southeast corner of Eagle Lake (2.5 miles south) as an experiment, using convict labor from a nearby prison farm to construct levees and harvest the new crop.
