The Fire

Ruby Waggoner was my dad’s mother. She and my grandfather had divorced when Cecil was very young. He was raised by his dad, Theron and a host of aunts, uncles and his grandparents. Ruby Lee, Grannie Ruby or Grannie was a big part of our life going up. She lived in Austin and visited her often. She was one funny old gal that laughed a lot and made the rest of us laugh. Any time after I was grown and had projects around North Austin, I’d stop by even if for just a few minutes. One day she and I … Continue reading The Fire

Could I Have Just Found Peter Pan?

I just drove into a vacant piece of property that I sold to LCRA the year before. Actually I was taking a shortcut to my office. As I drove to an area that few people drive to any more there was a young lady that had parked her Prius in the middle of the road. It took her a few moments to discover that she wasn’t alone. As I set watching she was running and leaping with her hands outreached. It all looked very graceful. After a bit she looked around and saw me, and came back to move her … Continue reading Could I Have Just Found Peter Pan?

How About Some Highway Talk, To Get The Morning Going.

One time when we were talking about borrow or bar ditches and crowns in the road, those terms are critical that make roadways safe during rainy conditions. That reminded me of another road building term. When you hear about the amount of super in a curve, (which I guarantee most of you never have) that actually is short for Superelevation. That is how much slope there is in a curve or how much tilt there is. If you notice racetracks have varying degrees of slope, depending on the speed that will be used during a race. A highway curve is … Continue reading How About Some Highway Talk, To Get The Morning Going.

What Is Wrong With Me

Technology Is So Great, that is if you understand how to use it. My case in point. I’m making a long drive today, alone. My wife listens to audio books very often when she drives. She swears it really makes time and the trip pass by faster. She suggested I download some books to listen to while I drive. I figured her suggestion had a dual purpose. Besides making my trip go faster, it would keep me from listening to the news so much. I don’t know where she ever got the idea that I’m a news junkie, but we … Continue reading What Is Wrong With Me

Let Me Tell You What Can Happen When The Government Get Involved

Back in 1985 I was very fortunate in making a couple of really good business moves. I sold an interest in my construction company that netted a good amount of money. It was not only the cash I got, but it positioned me to be a bigger and better construction company. At the about the same time I was able to sell a piece of property, which was an office and construction yard, that I had bought and used for almost a decade and sold for 4 1/2 times what I paid for it. Between both of those deals it … Continue reading Let Me Tell You What Can Happen When The Government Get Involved

John, We Ain’t In Marble Falls Anymore

I posted pictures of laying pipes across Lake Marble Falls back in the early 1980s. On this forum my friend John mentioned in a post about things going so well on the pipes going across the lake that he, Belinda, Madeline and I took a trip to Vegas to enjoy our successes. Our flight was out of Austin. The plane had passengers on it that had originated in Houston. When John, the 2 blond bombshell’s and I boarded we looked back and our friend and fellow MF Classmate, Winfield was toward the back. With hand gestures we agreed to visit … Continue reading John, We Ain’t In Marble Falls Anymore

Golf Balls in the Highway

Driving down the road one morning a few years ago on my way to New Braunfels, I took US 281 and turned east on Texas 46. Not long after turning, I saw a pickup that had pulled over on the side of the road going up a fairly grade. I was just far enough from it that I couldn’t tell exactly what was happening but as I got closer I could see a white wave moving down the highway. I pulled over to watch the commotion caused by a big plastic trash can of golf balls that had tipped over … Continue reading Golf Balls in the Highway

Then and Now, a lot of differences.

An incident happened back sometime in the mid 80s that I’d all but forgotten. We took one of our many trips to Houston to watch the Astros play baseball and let the boys go to AstroWorld. We were staying at the Holiday Inn, at the corner of Loop 610 and Kirby Dr., which was a short walk to either AstroWorld or the AstroDome. This particular day we let the two older boys go to AstroWorld alone or maybe they stayed when the rest of us left. They were about ages 10 & 13. This is unthinkable in today’s terms, but … Continue reading Then and Now, a lot of differences.
