How My Woodworking Hobby Began

I spent more than 55 years of my life without a hobby, for several reasons. First of all, having an attention span of a gnat, coupled with very little patience for detail and most of all I didn’t have time for such things. I started doing various woodworking projects almost by accident. Here’s how it happened. We have a very unique table that we got from Madeline’s mom, Maxine, many years ago. It was a coffee table brought back from Venezuela by Maxine and Ted in the 1960s. It’s not just a regular coffee table, it is huge. It’s made … Continue reading How My Woodworking Hobby Began

Back When I Was “Retired”

Oh what a difference six years can make. Back then I was retired, getting up and walking a mile or so down Ocean Drive and then onto Shoreline Drive to the wharf area to watch the sun rise up over Corpus Christi Bay. I really met some interesting folks on those strolls. While out for a walk one morning I ran across an interesting fellow. We walked and talked for a mile or so. Very interesting guy. When we were parting ways that first morning we actually did our introductions. “Well I’m Tom Sawyer” to which I said “I’m Huck … Continue reading Back When I Was “Retired”

My Friend Jim

Here I was a couple of weeks ago, sitting thinking, thinking of my past. I decided 20 years was too long to go without seeing and talking to my ole friend Jim. Jim and I had once belonged to the same church, played on the church softball team together and between the two of us, we had 9 kids, with only 1 girl in the bunch. We had a lot in common, yet hardly anything in common. Jim was college educated and had worked in the non-profit world and I barely made it out of high school and was attempting … Continue reading My Friend Jim

How About That !

My brother went to see a friend this afternoon. The friend has just returned for Nebraska. (where he is originally from). He brought back his grandfathers 1929 Ford Model AA – Grain Truck. It has been stored for years in a barn on the farm. It has a total of 3115 miles on the odometer. This second picture shows a box that held smudge pot flares, in case they were needed along the way to and from the granary. Continue reading How About That !

Meeting Fine Folks Over A Meal

I went out south of Bertram one Saturday morning back in 2014 to a Texas Ranger Cross Dedication. After the dedication we were invited back to Fort Croghan in Burnet for lunch. I got my plate of catfish and set down at one of the long tables. Seated across from me was a nice couple that I started chatting with. The Angora Chronicles was something pretty new at that time, so I told them all about it. Actually it was mostly the lady that I engaged with. I got her name and invited her to join us in our story … Continue reading Meeting Fine Folks Over A Meal

It’s Been A Sad Day

Today has been a very sad day. A beautiful home was a total loss. However no one was injured. Many years of memories, hard work and treasures are now a pile of ashes. I know this because it was the home of my brother, Kenny and his wife Carol. They will be fine. They are fortunate to have a vacant home just down the road to go to tonight. They are resilient, but much sadness is in their future. Unlike most things with me, it’s a story so I let it rip on Facebook, namely on The Angora Chronicles. But … Continue reading It’s Been A Sad Day

Through The Ashes

After the Fire Department left the house this afternoon, we were able to get a few things that were dear to Carol and Kenny. Many photo albums survived. It’s hard to believe, that they had so many pictures and maybe a couple dozen or more albums survived. Most of Kenny’s family history books were still there. Some damp, some wet, some were mostly unaffected. They even found a few paintings in good shape. One was a painting of Cow Creek by a local artist. His name escapes me at the moment, but Madeline and I gave it to them for … Continue reading Through The Ashes

Playing The Game Of “Connect The People”

It’s strange how people all around the country are connected and we never realize it. I was reading about the Wolf Family from Georgetown (owned the land where the Wolf Ranch Shopping Center is located). We did a lot of work around that development and got to know some of that family. Actually I had known Harry Robertson that married into the Wolf family since childhood. Harry’s sister had married one of my cousins way back when. Mr. Jay Wolf (the patriarch) died back in the 90’s. Wondering about Mrs. Wolf, Bettie, I found her obit. She had passed on … Continue reading Playing The Game Of “Connect The People”

Are You Going To Buckle Your Seatbelt?

I once was passing my neighbors place out of Dripping Springs and saw he was there. It was a weekday and I realized he, being a state employee probably had the day off because it was Texas Independence Day.  When I pulled up he came outside a we visited a few minutes, then he said, why don’t we drive into town a buy a 6 pack of Lone Star Beer and drive over across the creek, Onion Creek, to the “lookout” a place he really enjoyed. It seemed like the Texas thing to do. I had nothing going on so … Continue reading Are You Going To Buckle Your Seatbelt?

The Little Things That Happen

Every day events in our life happen that shape the course of our history. I sometimes play the “IF” game with myself. The most simple occurrence, the conversations we have, the chance encounters change the course of everything that will happen for the rest of our lives and will impact the lives of so many others. The most important chance encounter that changed my life happened by simply stopping at a beer joint one afternoon. The old 281 Club, that many of you remember, used to set on the side of highway between Johnson City and Marble Falls at Round … Continue reading The Little Things That Happen
