Throwing Darts

I was 8 or 9 and Jimmy was three years older. Hannah had made the purchase of some new furniture, perhaps a Lazy Boy. The furniture store delivered it in a pickup with tall solid wooden sideboards, that displayed the store name on it. It made have been WF & JF Barnes Lumber and Furniture, but I can’t be for certain about that. But what I can be for sure about, when the men headed in the house to get the new piece setup, Jimmy and I started throwing darts at the side of that pickup, having a good ol’ … Continue reading Throwing Darts

Because It Felt Right

Back in the 1980s, probably 1987 or 88 , I was an adult sponsor on a high school church mission trip to Appalachia to a little coal mining town in West Virginia. A chance encounter happened one evening. After a hard days work, after dinner we would walk to a convenience store a couple of blocks from the community center where we were staying. We would go there and get ice cream, but mostly we went there to use a pay phone to call home. I had a cell phone but it was difficult back then to get service many … Continue reading Because It Felt Right

Anyone Feeling Like Stepping Out Of Your Comfort Zone Tonight?

I would love to hear who all knows about the old farmhouse on US 281 just south of Hof Brau, (most likely it was the Mustang Tavern at the this time) that was a “House of Ill Repute”. I think the time frame was in the early 1960’s. The house still stands today. It is the next property south of the old Hof Brau, on the same side of the highway. A Memorial Service Service to Celebrate the Life of Jim Palmer

The service will begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 17, 2019. There will be Words said, Jimmy’s favorite songs sang and maybe a few stories told, followed by a pot luck lunch. Please come join us for this Celebration on the Lake. It will be at The Lewis Lakeview Pavillion, 930 County Road 343 A, Marble Falls, Texas. Big Daddy was the happiest when he was surrounded by family. I have it on good authority that Mrs. Palmer will be decked out in her boots and green socks for the memorial service. (Big Jim’s Most Favored Attire On Her) Continue reading A Memorial Service Service to Celebrate the Life of Jim Palmer

A Day Like Today Makes Me Think Back…….

……to the old chest type coke machines that kept the bottles in a bath of cold water. The drinks were the coldest of any you could find. Sometimes the flavor you wanted would be down the line and you’d have to work to reorganize them into other tracks until you finally slid the bottle along metal rails to the flip gate that was activated when you dropped your money in the slot. It actually took effort to pull hard enough to get them out. (Only people that used this type of coke machine will understand what I’m saying) I think the … Continue reading A Day Like Today Makes Me Think Back…….

Marble Falls saw a lot of new things happen, but saw an old landmark come down in 1964

These two very recognizable faces were such a big part of Marble Falls Downtown business in the 60s. Dwayne Michel – White’s Auto and Kenneth McKinney – Famous Department Store. A new meeting place for many of us. Home State Bank found a new home. The Old Factory Building came down. These photos are from this special Highlander Publication Continue reading Marble Falls saw a lot of new things happen, but saw an old landmark come down in 1964

The Crash (this was originally written Nov. 6, 2016)

Traveling through Liberty Hill on our way home from our anniversary brunch I am reminded of a story that happened just a couple of weeks before we married in November of “71”. I was working in Burnet and Madeline was living in South Austin with Dixie Lewis and another gal. On Wednesday nights I’d drive to Austin to court her, spend the night and head out early the next morning so as to arrive in Burnet by 7:00 AM. Now when I say I would go court her, it was actually more like picking Madeline and Dixie up and heading … Continue reading The Crash (this was originally written Nov. 6, 2016)

My Surprise (from Nov. 2014)

I had a very pleasant surprise this evening. I got a text from a very dedicated employee, Chris Chapman and his wife Jeni. Jeni is the daughter of Madeline’s brother David. Chris has worked for the company almost his entire adult life, just short of 20 years. They had left a box by our back door here in Bertram. When I went out and retrieved and opened it, there were 5 copies of The Angora Chronicles, volume one. It has 67 stories, mostly some of the first stories I submitted. It is so professionally done. When Chris heard about my … Continue reading My Surprise (from Nov. 2014)

Get Busy And Tell Your Story

As many of you know The Angora Chronicles got started by several people encouraging me to tell some of the stories of my growing up years. I had about four dozen stories that I’d written several years ago, just mainly as a way to leave something behind for my sons and grandkids, telling them about what life was like in my early years. That only seemed important because it wasn’t likely that anyone else would ever do it for me. Besides if anyone tried, they wouldn’t tell it like it really happened. I’m the only person on earth that knows … Continue reading Get Busy And Tell Your Story
