The Smashed Finger

It was a cold February morning in 1971. My dad had leased a truck out to a Trucking Company in San Antonio with me driving it. I would spend all week living in a small rundown motel, The Spur, that was along I-10 on the east side of San Antonio. The trucking yard was just down the frontage road. Most of the time I hauled equipment around San Antonio, but one afternoon I was dispatched to a steel company on north I-35 to load steel beams to go to a new building being built in Houston. I got loaded and … Continue reading The Smashed Finger

The Mystery Has Been Solved

A few days ago I was mopping the kitchen floor with one of these Bissell machines that sprays water and cleanser out, has some spinning brushes that scrubs the floor and lastly it sucks the dirty water up in another reservoir. This was just after we had entertained a big bunch of our grandkids on New Years Eve. So it was really needing a cleaning. After I did a fairly small area the machine made the sound that it makes when the dirty water reservoir is full and needs emptying. I thought that strange. I unsnapped the little tank to … Continue reading The Mystery Has Been Solved

The Back Nine or “Growing Old Gracefully”

You know … Time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is… The back nine of my life and it catches me by surprise… How did I get here so fast? … Continue reading The Back Nine or “Growing Old Gracefully”

Cruising The UT Drag

The spring of 1971 found Jimmy Frasier and me in Austin one Friday afternoon. Probably for no other reason than hoping to find some excitement. I had a brand new Chevrolet pickup. We decided a drive down to the Drag was in order. When we got as far a 34th street on Guadalupe, heading south when we stopped for a red light. A couple of pretty young UT gals were in the right lane, with us in the left. Paying more attention to the girls than to driving, when the light changed as they eased off. So did we. The … Continue reading Cruising The UT Drag

A Trip To See The Doctor

A few years ago, my wife and I were getting ready to leave for a trip of a lifetime. A trip that I was really excited about. We were flying up to Calgary Canada and getting on a train to spend the next few days traveling west to Vancouver. The train moved along during the daytime, stopping at night, allowing us to sleep in nice hotel rooms. Once we got to Vancouver, we spent a day or so there then boarded a cruise ship for a trip up to Alaska to see the amazing sights and then back again, where … Continue reading A Trip To See The Doctor

Mobile Phones On The Cheap

After the prosperous years of the 80’s came the real estate bust of the late 80’s and early 90’s. Kenny, Coy (of double tailed quarter fame) and I were teamed up again doing work together. The days of mobile phones had given way to pagers and pay phones. Mobile phones were very costly in the early days. My average phone bill in the 80’s was $1,000 – $1,200 per month. And that wasn’t for the whole company, that was just me. I stayed on the phone constantly, conducting business and doing a fair share of BSing. Those costs just weren’t … Continue reading Mobile Phones On The Cheap

A Beautiful Jackie Kennedy or is it ?

I only have one regret in bringing you this picture. That it wasn’t clearer and in color. He was wearing a nice red dress. Would you ever guess this was a 13 year old Kenny Lewis, on his way to a talent show for the end of school at Pond Springs Elementary School in Jollyville, Texas – May 1963. He was a very attractive Jackie Kennedy, the First Lady of the United States. I promise if I run across a better photo, I’ll post it. He was smokin hot.
