I posted pictures of laying pipes across Lake Marble Falls back in the early 1980s. On this forum my friend John mentioned in a post about things going so well on the pipes going across the lake that he, Belinda, Madeline and I took a trip to Vegas to enjoy our successes.
Our flight was out of Austin. The plane had passengers on it that had originated in Houston. When John, the 2 blond bombshell’s and I boarded we looked back and our friend and fellow MF Classmate, Winfield was toward the back. With hand gestures we agreed to visit once we were airborne.
Winfield had gone through law school and had become a Houston attorney by that time and had yet to be disbarred.
This was more than forty years ago. The mixing of races wasn’t so prevalent, especially in Marble Falls, Texas. There is a reason I’m telling you this.
When we got up in the air and the seatbelt signs went off, I got up to head for the back but Winfield was already charging for the front. He was acting strange. At some point he got John and me apart from the girls. He needed us to cooperate on a situation. For his weekend getaway to Vegas he had rented a girlfriend. He thought that since we neither one had ever lost our Marble Falls roots, that we’d make fun of him for having a black girlfriend. So he was trying to keep us from finding out. We each let him know that we were very approving of it. We were more worldly than he gave us credit for.
His real deal was he didn’t want the girls to know. He was afraid that they might mention it around town.
We finally landed in Vegas. I think the most fun part was watching him trying to keep a distance between him and the girl when he saw us all holding up in the corridor heading to baggage claim. He did some maneuver to get her to go to the bathroom so he could somehow dislodge himself from us.
The funny thing about it, he was much more concerned than we were. We would have been happy to have them join up with us throughout the weekend. We had already explained it to the girls, but he didn’t know that.
We found out where he was staying so as a parting shot we told him we’d come visit. I think he probably spent his weekend looking over his shoulder, thinking we were going to walk in on them. I’m not sure that he didn’t switch hotels.
He never revealed what the financial arraignments were, but from what I remember of her modeling agency good looks, it wasn’t a cheap date.
Another wild story about Winfield. Good and funny story. Typical!! I can see him now.I can’t recall exactly what year it was that we were roommates but it was when Winfield met and married his wife. He had bought a brand new red Ford pickup truck.I had been dating Winfields cousin Linda Lock and dated her for 7 years. She is the one you tracked down for me a year or two ago..I am truly sorry that both Winfield and Linda are gone now. Bob Gerstenberg
