It Took Me Weeks To Figure Out Why She Was Upset

Not long after we married in 1971, I came home with Madeline a brand new 1972 Dodge Demon automobile. It was an absolute beauty. White with a White Pearlescent Vinyl Top and Snowy White Interior. Very sporty but not in a hot rod sort of way. More in a very hot, young chick sort of way. That baby had all the beauty and innocents that my new wife had. My Dad had gone with me to Austin to buy it. I needed him to drive my pickup back. What better thing could a new husband do than go buy the … Continue reading It Took Me Weeks To Figure Out Why She Was Upset

Reuben Sandwich

Not that anyone asked, but my favorite sandwich is a Reuben. I can’t tell you the first time I had one but I can tell you I’ve eaten a bunch of them. Most likely I’ve eaten more that I’ve made myself than all the ones from various deli’s and sandwich shops. We went to the Famous Katz Delicatessen in Manhattan a couple of weeks ago when we were there. There’s is very good. Actually the corned beef they have is what sets theirs apart. I was a bit disappointed that they don’t grill the bread. But with the quality of … Continue reading Reuben Sandwich

Dink’s Ring

As much as I have written about Dink and his ability to talk me into things, I was able to get one thing from him that I really wanted. He wore a lot of jewelry, including gold chains when they were the thing back in the 60’s and 70’s. He had a ring, a pinky ring that he wore. It was a really unique ring, gold with a brown diamond. A large brown diamond was a Calf’s Head cut, about the side of a pencil eraser. I knew he really liked that ring but I would always try to trade … Continue reading Dink’s Ring

The Challenging One

There was a comment on another post this morning by ex-school nurse Jan talking about Ron Jr. leaving school when he wasn’t suppose to. I have no trouble buying into that happening. There was one morning in his 16th year of life that I wish he had left school for the day. Let me explain; Ron Jr. got his first car, a Ford Probe. It’s hard for me to remember now, but it was either within weeks, maybe days or possibly hours he totaled it out on a country road, driving way too fast and I’m certain he wasn’t paying … Continue reading The Challenging One

It’s Only A Matter Of Time

When I reflect back on the competitive nature of my brother and me, I know that one day we will both show up at the local Walmart and in our attempt to be the first through the door our Rascal Scooters will become entangled, turning over and we’ll both be laying on the sidewalk kicking around unable to get up. After telling the story about the Circling 4 Wheelers a few days ago, no one should have a doubt about the possibilities. The photo is something I found on the internet and not actually us, but it will at least … Continue reading It’s Only A Matter Of Time

A Nice Sunday Afternoon Motorcycle Ride

A few years ago we were doing a project in Brownsville, Texas. Being a nice Sunday I decided to ride my Goldwing down. Madeline was coming down later so she was pulling the trailer so I could haul it back home later that week. Ron Jr. was working on that job so he was already down there. He had a motorcycle so I suggested he ride up to Corpus so we could meet for lunch then ride back together. After having lunch we headed out for the 3 hour trip to the valley. We took some backroads getting out of … Continue reading A Nice Sunday Afternoon Motorcycle Ride

Men Never Stop To Ask For Directions, or at least that’s the reputation that follows them around.

Once when Madeline and I were newly married we decided to go to Six Flags in Arlington. I was somewhat familiar with the area so I figured I could drive right to our hotel without looking at a map. I admit that once we got close I became slightly disoriented. I may have driven in a circle for a moment. It was late and Madeline wanted me to stop and ask for directions, which wasn’t something I would have ever done. I had her busy looking at a roadmap while I drove. Finally, exasperated she said “pull in here and … Continue reading Men Never Stop To Ask For Directions, or at least that’s the reputation that follows them around.

Snow Skiing – Ronnie Lewis Style

When we were younger, much younger, several couples and our children all went to Lake Tahoe for a little get away. I wasn’t an accomplished skier when we got there. To tell you the truth I’d never had a pair of snow skis on. Several in our group had never skied either, including my wife and my brother, so they enrolled in Ski School. One couple with us were accomplished skiers. John and Belinda Kemper made it sound easy. So rather than waste time with ski school I got my equipment on and headed to the top of the mountain. … Continue reading Snow Skiing – Ronnie Lewis Style

The Check That Dink Wrote Me

Dink would drift back through Austin occasionally, always calling to meet up for coffee. When we would meet there were tales of mining for gold in Alaska or diamonds in South Africa. He was living a life of adventure. He built a machine that they would sink to the bottom of the sea floor and excavate soil and rocks, operating it remotely. The hard materials he excavated would be pumped to barges, then processed looking for diamonds. He had a good mind for building contraptions. I saw pictures of this machine but I have no idea if it really worked. … Continue reading The Check That Dink Wrote Me

Investigating People

I’ve always liked keeping up with who’s where and what old friends are up to. Once the internet came along I started doing skip tracing. I became able to hone my skills and can find out more than I should about almost anyone. But you just have to be careful how you use it. Once I had a son that was dating a young lady. The first time I met her and she told me where she was from, I said oh, do you happen to know John Smith and his wife Suzy (not their real names). They were her … Continue reading Investigating People
