Just sauntering around on FaceBook and ran across a video about a pay phone booth that once stood out in the middle of the Mojave Desert, a few miles out of Baker, California.

Yes a pay phone in the middle of nowhere.

What attracted me to the story (it’s probably too long for most people to sit and listen to, but for me at 5:00 AM it was just right) but when they said phone out of Baker California I was compelled to see what it was all about.

The reason? My uncle Gene Massey, that was married to my aunt Maxine (we always called her Cokie) worked for the telephone company and was based out of Baker for many years.

Now I’m curious what he would have been able to tell about the strange phone booth. After Gene retired they lived in Smithwick for several years prior both of them passing in 2014. They now reside at the Smithwick Cemetery.

I can’t imagine that he wouldn’t be able to shed some light on this very strange story.
