It Just Came Out Of The Blue

I was lying in bed. It was almost 10:00 PM on a Saturday night. My phone rang and it was a number I didn’t recognize, but I decided to answer it.

“You still having that Cowboy Rodeo going on out at your place ?” I could tell this fellow had drank bit too much, so I soft pedaled the conversation. The call didn’t seem all that threatening, so I figured he had misdialed my number. Then he went on to call out a name I was familiar with. For the sake of this writing I’ll just call him John Smith.

“You know John Smith, he was your right hand man on that San Gabriel job”. I knew who he was talking about, but I had to confess that John Smith certainly wasn’t my right hand man. He had worked for the company for a year or so back during the timeframe of the San Gabriel project. So that gave me a pretty good idea that this intoxicated fellow knew who he was talking to, even if I had no idea with whom I’m on the phone with. He finally told me he was Jethro Smith.

We continued on with small talk, until I could tell the conversation was on a dead end path. I invited the guy to call me back when he sobered up. This exchange last for 2 to 3 minutes before I hung up and went back to doing whatever it was that had previously been occupying my time.

Approximately 10 minutes later the phone rang again, I answered, figuring this fellow hadn’t sobered up, but I thought that perhaps I could extract a little more information out of him. The conversation went off the rails almost immediately, with him telling me he may come out there and whip my ass. I let him know that may not be all that easy for him to do, but if he was considering coming out here he may want to put on a bulletproof vest.

The conversation degenerated into him claiming his manhood was bigger than mine, I assured him that wasn’t necessarily a huge bragging right. I finally got him to tell me his name was Jack Smith, whom I recognized as being the twin brother to John that had once worked for the company. But I had no idea if this was who was actually on the phone.

We ended this second phone call with me telling the caller to not be contacting me again. The rest of the night was quite, but a little unsettling.

Since I had the callers phone number I started searching to see if that number was associated to anyone on the vast World Wide Web. I did find it associated with a couple of businesses in the Austin area. Those businesses are associated with the Smith Family.

The next morning I called my former employee, John Smith. When I laid all this out to him and gave him the phone number from the night before, he confirmed it was his brothers number. He seemed as flabbergasted about the whole deal as I was. He assured me that he would get to the bottom of it all.

We will see what happens, as it hasn’t had time to completely play out. It was last night that I got the two phone calls and I just got off the phone with John.

I’ll update this story as it plays out. All A Bit Weird.

UPDATED the afternoon preceding the phone calls.

This was a texting exchange between us.
