Airport Ramada Inn San Antonio, Texas Nov. 6, 1971

My wife and I married in Marble Falls at 3:00 PM and had what was a fairly short reception. I’m not sure what happened to the time that day, but we hit San Antonio well after dark.

We pulled that 1967 Chevrolet Caprice Automobile into this place out by the Airport, like we had good sense. I went inside while the bride stayed in the car and told them we needed the nicest room they had.

The feller at the counter said we are pretty full tonight and our Wedding Suites are booked. He said, “You didn’t make a reservation?”. I told him I hadn’t. He said give him a few minutes and he would see what he could do.

Now I had to make the long walk back to the car. When I told my lovely bride that he was trying to see what he could do, she said
“You didn’t make a reservation?”

A few minutes later when I walked back in the gent informed me everything was fine and he had just the room for us. Sure enough we were helped to our room, actually our suite, and the night was saved.

Being used to getting up early, we got our things together the next morning and headed north up US 281 to the new rented house (okay it was a mobile home) near Marble Falls that we had spend the week before readying for us to begin our life together in.

One thing I learned from that experience was to call ahead and make arraignments. If not they may not always “Leave the light on for you“, as the old Motel 6 commercials said.

53 1/2 years later that same ole gal is still putting up with me and I’m still trying to figure how not to always be a country boy.
