I had a fellow tell me about this barber we both know in Austin that got a call one time summoning him to cut LBJ’s hair. When it came time to settle up, he was told that he shouldn’t charge for his services, because cutting the Presidents hair was an honor.
Well that was the one and only haircut that Lyndon got off of him.
That story reminded me of the following happening:
I went down to the LBJ Library and got them to run me a copy to cassettes of all of Lyndon’s phone calls while he was in office.
It was like listening to a comedy skit.
One of the Presidental Historians (let me qualify that a bit – a used to be Presidental Historian before he started weighing in on politics and ruined his career) did something similar and released a select grouping of LBJ’s phone conversations on CD’s. It was fall down funny.
I would plug those tapes in and listen to them as I traveled around from place to place. I got a lot of good out of them.
I think that set of tapes ran me $200 – $300, back when that was a bunch of money. But they were very educational or was that entertaining.
Probably my favorite of all of his calls
