2J’s

The talk in Austin always seems to make its way to 2J’s.

Ok, I did a little digging and found out where the name 2J’s came from. Here goes:

There was a Methodist Minister that came to Austin, became an Executive Assistant to Texas Governor James V Allred back in the 30s. His name was Patrick Moreland. He later got in the restaurant business, opening 2J’s.
He had 2 very good friends, Jim Collins & Jim Hasslocker, so he named it after them, the first initial of each ones given name.

Couple of other facts.

Jim Hasslocker was the owner and namesake of the Jim’s Restaurant Chain.

Patrick Moreland had a son, Ralph Moreland that was known throughout the Austin area for creating and owning a number of restaurants, including Holiday House Hamburgers and many more.

  1. Around 1975, I was waiting at a service window of the 2J’s on the drag (I was a student at UT) to buy one of the delicious gigantic cinnamon rolls. Two of the street people (referred to as “Drag Rats”) were talking when I overheard one say to the other, “I’m going to 2J’s for 2 joints, man!” They both burst out laughing like that was the funniest thing they’d ever said or heard. Typical ‘70’s Austin!
