The Colorful Characters Of My Youth

This Doesn’t Need To Be A Competition between the towns, you know. Even though most everything escalated into a rivalry of some degree back in my growing up years when it came to Burnet and Marble Falls.

I was sitting around thinking about some of the real characters that were in Marble Falls when I was growing up. I just don’t think they make characters nowadays, like they used to.

Did Burnet have any of these people that left a mark on the town like Marble Falls did? Or did they all end up in the south part of the county?

We had the fast walking Cecil Maugham, that thought nothing of striking out to the County Line walking or even to Buchanan Dam. Teddy Maugham that pulled his hat far down on his head, standing on the corner by WF & JF Barnes Lumber Yard. He may not have been a great orator, but he was fun to interact with.

Then there was Percy Lusinger doing magic tricks and Phelin Stricklan telling stories. The drunker they were the better the magic tricks and stories.

We can never forget Mrs. Sparks waving that little hankie to get people to stop and pick her up. Or Bottle Annie with her bicycle going around collecting bottles up and down the highways.

Then there was Glenn Lewis, with a prank or a shenanigan of some sort going on from daylight to dusk, and when darkness struck he’d really cut loose. But we can’t forget Lee Odiorne who always had something to say.

Of course Max Copeland may not fit into the same line with all the ones above, but he was truly a colorful character of his own right.

If you think of that special or notable person in either town, let us hear from you in the comments.
