My friend of many years, John R Hughes, who passed away 4 years ago next week, told me many times that he was named after his great uncle the famous Texas Ranger John Reynolds Hughes.
John R. as he was always refereed to, not John very often, but John R would tell a story. I’m sure if he ever told me that his famous great uncle was actually the Lone Ranger (without a mask I’m almost sure) I probably would have laid it off to just being a wild tale or something. But doing a little reading up on the matter tells me differently.
The following is what is written in his BIO section on Find-A-Grave. Glad it has a Liberty Hill connection.

I still don’t understand why The Lone Ranger wore a mask.
I read an article that thought the inspiration for the Lone Ranger was a black ranger named Bass Reeves….History.com has a lengthy article with a few photos….

I have also heard that deputy US marshal Bass Reeves may have been an inspiration for The Lone Ranger. I have also heard that an Arizona Ranger was an inspiration for The Lone Ranger as well, so who knows. I know John R. Hughes was a pretty famous Texas Ranger, and he could easily have been an inspiration for The Lone Ranger as well. Their are a few books written about him that I might read sometime. I’m sure there is information on him at the Ranger Museum over in Waco. Anyway I did enjoy reading your story about him.

I read that and very likely it was a combination of people that Zane Grey thought about as he wrote the stories.
